According to The Daily Mirror, Manchester United is contemplating a summer transfer for Ivan Toney, a forward for Brentford (via The Sport Review). Due to concerns over Cristiano Ronaldo's future, the Red Devils are actively searching for a new forward.
Christen Eriksen, a former Brentford player, was already a free agent when he was signed by United this summer. Prior to the 2022–23 season, the Red Devils are now trying to pair him up with a former teammate.
The aforementioned source claims that Toney's first Premier League season last year wowed Manchester United. In 33 league games last season, the 26-year-old attacker scored 12 goals and contributed five assists.
Ivan Toney is a pure center-forward, and if United loses Ronaldo this summer, they would need to bolster that position.
But it's important to note that Manchester United isn't the only team trying to recruit Toney this summer. In the race to recruit the English forward, Leeds United, West Ham United, and Newcastle United are apparently also involved.
Currently, Toney's contract with Brentford has three more years to run. The 26-year-old forward is worth about £31 million, per Transfermarkt.
What other forwards have been rumoured to be interested in joining Manchester United this summer?
This summer, Manchester United has been connected to a variety of attackers due to their need for a new center-forward. The Sport Review reports that the Red Devils and RB Leipzig forward Brian Brobbey have been linked.
Brobbey played for Erik ten Hag while on loan at Ajax during the second half of the previous season. The Amsterdam-based team is also interested in hiring the Dutch forward long-term. The Dutchman is close to joining Ajax this summer, according to Mike Verweij (through The United Stand; via Manchester Evening News). For the bulk of the transfer window, the Red Devils have also been connected with a move for Ajax attacker Antony. The Brazilian international is still at the top of United's summer want list, claims transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.
In Ronaldo's absence, Ten Hag has thus far used Anthony Martial as a forward during preseason games. In the two friendlies that United has played while on their preseason tour of Thailand and Australia, the Frenchman has scored two goals.
Marcus Rashford also scored in their most recent preseason match, which Manchester United won 4-1 over Melbourne Victory on July 15.
